Sheary Clough Suiter About the Artist
Suiter’s unique, imaginative painting style incorporates both figurative images and abstract design. She paints to express inner feelings and emotions, rather than to portray outer reality in an accurate, rational manner.
Suiter was born and raised in Eugene, Oregon, attending both Oregon State University and the University of Oregon. After graduating from Lane Community College with a degree in Dental Hygiene, Suiter headed up the Alcan Highway north to Alaska. She spent the next ten years in bush Alaska, devoting summers to managing a remote sport fishing lodge.
Suiter completed her BFA at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. Her talent for the visual arts emerged in an elective beginning drawing class; surprised and delighted by the accolades she received and the joy she experienced, Suiter pursued an extensive self-directed art education through reading, gallery/museum visits, mentorships, and lots of painting. She has now been a working artist for over twenty years and has received numerous awards recognizing her expertise in Encaustic medium.
A fundamental component in all of Suiter's work is an interest in serendipitous connections between people, places, and things, in how even a seemingly insignificant choice alters the course of a life, or the making of a piece of art. Her intent is to evoke visually a sense of the deeper, elemental side of our shared humanity. Suiter is drawn to the medium of encaustic for the way it encourages experimentation and playfulness, for its capacity to be layered and sculpted, and for the sensual nature of the aromatic beeswax which permeates her studio. Her favorite technique is to carve and scrape back into the layered wax. This reduction process creates a complexity of color, shape, and inter-connectivity impossible to achieve with a paintbrush alone.
