Stephan Fine Arts' doors opened in 1977 in downtown Anchorage by husband/wife team, Pat & Pam Stephan. Inspired by works they had collected on their travels, they initially showcased National Artists such as LeRoy Neiman, Aldo Luongo, and Hiro Yamagata. However, it became apparent rather quickly that Alaska was full of raw talent, endless inspiration, and long winters when artists could really devote themselves to their chosen medium. Since then, Stephan's enjoys showcasing artists primarily from Alaska, but equally enjoys bringing works from other states and countries - specifically to enrich the collecting opportunities for local residents.
Pat & Pam passed the baton to me in 2006. Curation, promotion, and the enjoyment and empowerment of art and artists have become my life's passion. I am inspired by design, fashion, expression, artistic innovation, and my love for people and their endless capacity to grow, thrive, and create. Art often comes from ashes; many an art practice has blossomed as a last resort in the face of one of life's difficult patches. For me, at the end of the day, there is no greater joy than helping someone say "I can do that!"
I have four sons. My eldest, Sydney (named after master Alaskan painter, Sydney Laurence) works for Honda in Research & Design. He is a dear friend to me, as well as a born party-thrower (yay me!). Fletcher is attending Washington State University with a double-major in Architecture and Piano Performance. He has always been deeply moved by - and aware of - the mystery and beauty of life. Winston is attending Northern Arizona University with a major in Electrical Engineering and minor in Computer Science; he is hilarious, sarcastic, and animated. He also has his own art practice; his works are humorous and embrace the natural world with a psychedelic twist. The "baby", J.T., is a deeply kind and energetic 12-year-old. He has mastered several types of Rubik's Cubes, adores his two parakeets, and recently posted a video on his YouTube channel of him eating an entire banana, peel included. Hmmm...
I've met so many wonderful people over the past 17 years at the gallery, and I look forward to meeting so many more in the years to come! From myself and Stephan Fine Arts' artists, thank you for being a part of our art journey!
With gratitude,
Becky Stephan
